Tire Carrier Build - WWYD

Buddy and I meet weekly to chat about life, watch videos of him fabricating stuff, and talk about what I need him to make me for my Rover.

He's into a tire carrier build, but I need to start with a baseline. Not much he can't build with the equipment he has. Looking for input.

I like the naka style, but don't want to just recreate. Thinking optional hilift and fuel can mounts. Could do something like the safari gard, but improved. I have zero trail time in a Defender, or knowledge of real world tire carrier issues.

What do you got?

I dunno about you but mine would be on a hydraulic lift. Run the ram from a boat trim tab pump (12V) or tilt pump. Humping big tires may be manly but...
Similar swing out bumper mount but with a pantograph type of frame with a lift cylinder. Swing out. Push remote, lowers tire to the ground. Swap good for bad. Put bad on carrier. Push remote, raises to transport position. latch carrier.

So a better version of the Mantec wheel lift. Interesting, I'll put it on the list. Want to try and stay mechanical, but good idea.

Hummvee uses a nak style mechanical lift one.

I'll just say make it 100% independent of the body. Only attachment to the rear crossmember

That's the plan, one attach point, no body.

I used those pump lifts on my hiback HMMWV for years. PITA as they were slow and cumbersome but they worked. Good idea.

Third eye for a brake light
As mentioned High Lift Jack
Antenna mount for CB
Work light mount

The reason I say these "mounts" is I hate extra holes in the body / top.

I like the idea of the cross-member only mounted carrier ... I'm a bit concerned about the shear load on the relatively thin metal, the long (effectively) lever holding the tire, and the potential tearing / deforming of the cross-member itself ... unfounded concern or no?

Surely a support at the center of the carrier - something that supports the load - wouldn't be a terrible idea???

I have this AEV one on my Jeep and I plan to copy it somewhat for my 110.

I got a heavy duty hinge from Ruffstuff that I will mount to the frame and my bumper I built. It's got mounts for my Pullpal, high lift, shovel and a water tank as well as a third light that I wired in a spot light instead.

The biggest thing I like is the single action door opening. No latching mechanism to undo first, makes it easy to open and close rear door and it's rated up to 40" tires, mine are 35" and no bouncing, very sturdy.

I have to get painting done and mount my rear door before I can build it but this bumper is the start.

Good stuff, keep it coming. Heres what I have.

Definites.
1. No body mounts
2. Single latch open
3. Sealed bearing
4. Tire height adjustment
5. Attachments options
6. Alu or Stainless

Considerations
1. Tire hoist assist
2. Horizontal tire adjustment

Annoying have some weight baselines for common wheel and tire combos?

I sent you a link to the Allisport carrier via pm. I personally like that one because it centers the tire and pivots from the bottom on one side. I am not a fan of it latching independently of the door on the left though. a design that open with the door on a SW is nice. The tire carrier that came on my POE from the factory seemed kind of perfect -- anyone know what brand tire carrier came on the POE trucks? Seems it would work on a SW too as the tailgate on the POE opened like a hinged door from the right. I get the appeal of a drop down tailgate that is easily removable, but you can't have everything.

I'd start off with a hinge kit, like this. Trailer bearings and spindle. Won't ever have to worry about it:

I would try to mount the tire as far to the passenger side as possible. This helps with access to the rear door handle (an issue I have with the Mantec unit on the back of my 109) and also a bit with visibility.

I would add an adjustable rod with two small heim joints to link it all to my rear door. So whenever I open my rear door, the tire carrier opens as well. This is a personal preference.

If you didn't want that, I'd say go with a hinge like this so you have your hinge and latch all in one mechanism.

I'm on the fence as to whether to add space for a gas can or not. I semi-regularly carry (maybe a few times a year) a gas can. Not a big deal to strap it down inside but would be nice to attach it exterior to the vehicle. That said, it would be an extra ~60 lbs out back that isn't necessary to be back there. Maybe some way to quickly add/delete a gas can carrier as needed.

we plan on using a stainless sealed bearing setup. the guys im working with basically design hinges of sorts all day, and they claim this is the way.
The business they are in demands no maintenance, so they dont want to do anything to the bearing unless is needs rebuilding, which can be done with off the shelf parts. Weight will not be an issue for the hinge so likely more of a problem for the crossmember. latch is a different story. Some good examples posted, thanks all for the links.

If you go with a bushing you can fit a much stronger spindle Than a bearing setup. You’re not dealing with high RPMs This is not an application for roller bearings

If anyone needs a hinge stay away from Comp 4x4 shown above. They take your money and run, I had to get Paypal to retrieve the funds after trying to contact someone for two months. I finally found a Facebook link showing everyone that had gotten ripped off.
